U. S. Steel Donations Make Holidays Happier for Northwest Indiana Residents

U. S. Steel’s Gary Works & Midwest Plant have a long history of supporting local residents dealing with food insecurity, especially during the end-of-year holiday season.  This year, the plant elected to once again make sizeable donations to two local food banks that specialize in addressing this challenge year-round.

The plant donated $15,000 each to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and the Portage Township Food Pantry.

According to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, our donation to their agency alone will allow them to provide approximately 45,000 meals to local residents during the busy holiday season beginning with Thanksgiving this week.  The Portage Township Food Pantry says their low operating costs enable 90% of all donations to go directly to providing much-needed food to those in need.

Three employees visited both agencies on Nov. 22 to deliver the good news and big checks: ShaKeia Reese (Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist), MarQus Williams (Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist) and Mark Sain (Vice President, United Steelworkers Local 1014 and Co-Chair, Joint Union-Management Safety Team).
