Volunteers from U. S. Steel’s Gary Works have gone back to school, volunteering to conduct STEM-oriented (science, technology, engineering and math) activities at Beveridge Elementary in Gary, Ind.  The effort is being organized by the plant’s LEAD (leveraging and Enhancing All Diversity) Employee Resource Group (ERG). 

Tom Ruffner, Manager – Engineering at Gary Works, teamed up with Angela Grayson, Beveridge’s Vice Principal, to develop two STEM programs for the 2021-22 school year.  The programs are:

• A monthly reading program for kindergarten through third grade.
• A teaching and projects program for students in third through fifth grade.  Five times per quarter, volunteers will instruct students in binary code, robotics programming, and other STEM-related subjects. 

Both efforts will culminate in a science fair in May 2022, during which the students will show off what they learned to family and friends.
