Meet the United by Service 2022 Service Champions and Honorable Mention Awardees

Yesterday during a special virtual event, U. S. Steel honored 39 employees for their volunteer service in 2022 to support our United by Service initiative.

Ray Tarnow, a Safety Engineer at Gary Works and Midwest Plant, was chosen as the United by Service 2022 “Volunteer of the Year," earning a $15,000 contribution by our company to his charity of choice: Disabled American Veterans Chapter #102.

In addition, 38 other employees were recognized as follows:

  • 13 employees were named 2022 Service Champions for the support they provided to a variety of organizations.  Each Service Champion earned their charity of choice a $5,000 donation.
  • 1 employee from U. S. Steel Košice – Dana Gogová – was selected as a Special Service Champion in recognition of her work to support Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war in their homeland.  She earned the Slovak Red Cross in Košice a $10,000 donation.
  • 24 employees received Honorable Mention recognition for their work in their communities.

Launched in 2021, U. S. Steel’s United by Service initiative was inspired by the community service legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Our goals: highlight the amazing volunteer work U. S. Steel employees regularly perform, encourage even more employees to help in whatever ways interest them, and honor employees who go above and beyond through our “Volunteer of the Year” awards program.

All totaled, U. S. Steel employees across the company volunteered more than 22,000 hours of their time to charitable causes in 2022.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone recognized for the work they do year-round to make our communities Best for All who live and work there.
