U. S. Steel Northwest IN Employees Hold Extremely Successful School Supply Drive

The Human Resources Department at U. S. Steel’s Gary Works coordinated a school supply drive for local elementary schools in Gary and Portage, Indiana, that, due to the extraordinary participation of all local Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and United Steelworkers locals, generated donations that were above and beyond expectations!

The local ERGs set up donation boxes throughout Gary Works and Midwest Plant.  The local unions participated by advertising the drive with their members both at the plant and their union halls.  In addition, union members, union leadership, and ERG members coordinated the pickup of the donation boxes within the plants and transported all the supplies to the schools.

The Gary Finishing Plant turned the drive into a “friendly” competition, and it really showed with fully loaded backpacks and ROWS of supplies!  Special hard hat tip to that group!  A generous donation from U. S. Steel also allowed the purchase of backpacks and planners for the schools to meet needs they specified.
