Throughout this holiday season, U. S. Steel Gary Works and the Midwest Plant were an official Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots drop-off location. They collected hundreds of toys, hosted a gate collection that raised over $11,000 and helped sort, package and deliver Christmas presents to children and families in Northwest Indiana.
This year, 1,173 families and 4,786 children were the recipients of these toys! What a gift to be able to give back to the community!
On Tuesday, Santa joined his helpers in passing out toys and greeting the children and families. It was certainly a hit! Santa even took selfies while helping keep spirits high with his jolly demeanor and his jingling bells!
Thank you to Tim Hensley, U. S. Steel Gary Works Operating Technician (RCM – Electric Repair Shop) for offering to be Santa for the day and help light up the children’s faces. In addition, thank you to Laura Gaskins of Gary Works' Human Resources team and several other volunteers, including U. S. Steel retiree Romie Thomasson. Romie keeps coming back to Gary to help out.
